Vending Machine History and Use

Posted on April 27, 2010, under Uncategorized.

A vending machine is a coin-operated item through which many objects may be retailed. Vending machines are sometimes taken for coin-activated amusement games or juke radios.

The first known business use of vending machines happened early in the 18th century in England, at which time coin-operated “honour boxes” were utilized to retail snuff and tobacco.

These boxes were also used by the British-American civilisations at a later point in the era.The original targeted, retailed utilization of vending machines was in the United States circa 1888, at which point devices were used to extend the retail of chewing gum into areas where gum sales could not have otherwise occurred, such as the waiting areas of the New York City elevated railway.

The American industry was restricted largely to penny-candy sales til 1926, at which point the modern standard of automatic retailing began by the establishment of cigarette vending machines. The first known soft-drink vending machine appeared around 1937.

As the US started its army buildup prior to its entry in World War II, plant trustees found that employees could not function effectively for 10, 12, or further hours if not allowed a lunch time, at which time vending machines were proved the most expedient procedure of providing refreshments.

During the 1940s to ’50s the vending machine business was seen largely in plants and factories, and by the close of that time, machines were being utilized to sell a wider variety of freshly provided alongside prepackaged foods to eradicate or go with standard in-plant food service procedures.

Refrigeration was adapted to vending machines to allow for the sale of bottled soft drinks. The employment of vending machines to sell products for competitive costs all day and night without notice to schedules is now widely recognized.

The market has gone above plants and factories, and devices are readily set in schools, colleges and universities, recreation centres, health care facilities, offices, and other places of education and work.

Typically, vending service is provided by businesses (operators) who own and put vending machines on locations owned by others. Those corporations provide whole upkeep and repair, as well as products, commonly with no a cost to the owners of the premises other than sometimes a servicing charge.Vending devices have been in use in Great Britain, continental Europe, and Scandinavia since the 1880s, when they were used to vend confectionery and tobacco items.

During modern years, the vending device business in those areas has closely reflected the expansion of vending machines in America.

Vending in Japan began rapidly in the 1960s and furthered vigorously in an iconic aspect in Japan’s distribution system.

Movies, Books, Politicians the Water Bottle is Under Siege

Posted on April 26, 2010, under Uncategorized.

Carry a plastic water bottle to your own demise; the tide of public view is forming away from you. From high rating documentaries, to articles and political debate, the red hot issue on the soapbox is the terror around bottled water and the waste its industry generates.

The processing, transportation and waste of water in petrochemical plastic bottles eats up tremendous quantities of water and energy, and creates large amounts of greenhouse gases and waste.

Director of the recent documentary ‘Tapped: get off the bottle’ Stephanie Soechtig states “1500 water bottles end up in landfill every second – that’s 30 million water bottles a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water.” The Tapped crew are pushing the movie with an across-America roadshow, asking money from Americans to take down their water bottle waste and taking their old plastic water bottle in exchange for a reusable stainless steel bottle. Download Tapped from Amazon or iTunes.

Another such film ‘The Story of Bottled Water’ was released on World Water Day in March. By Annie Leonard of the well-received ‘The Story of Stuff’, this short animated film shows the method that is used to conning Americans into purchasing more than half a billion bottles of water every week, instead of a few cents cost for a drink from the tap. See this short film on You Tube.

In her book ‘Bottlemania’, investigator Elizabeth Royte chronicles one of the most massive marketing tricks of our century and provides a strong environmental wakeup call. She investigates the problems we must inevitably understand. Who has ownership of our water supply? What could happen when a bottled-water business stakes a claim on your town’s drinking water? Is the water coming from a tap wholly safe? What is really the environmental factor of production, transporting and disposing of a plastic water bottle?

Politicians from all around the nation are beginning to realise that they have to take responsibility – especially when the places in which they serve are huge consumers of bottled water. How often do we witness a politician in a meeting sipping from a water bottle. They might use a water glass in Parliament House.

Leslie Samuelrich of Corporate Accountability International, held that “Cities and states are spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on bottled water, and that’s not to mention what’s spent to deal with all the plastic bottles that are thrown out.”

In July 2009, the NSW rural town of Bundanoon became the first group of Australia to prevent the sale of bottled water. Around 60 townships in the United States and some towns in Canada and the UK have recently ceased expending taxpayer dollars on bottled water.

It is doubtless that these dilemmas will be on the agenda in World Water Week 2010 from September 5 to 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, the annual meeting for the globe’s most time-sensitive water-related issues.

Types of Non-Destructive Testing

Posted on April 14, 2010, under Uncategorized.

The tensile-strength test is inherently damaging; during the process of gathering information, the sample is wasted. Though this is excusable when a large store of the material is available, nondestructive methods are safer for materials that are expensive or difficult to make up or that have been shaped into finished or semicompleted items.

Liquids

One tried and true nondestructive technique, employed to target surface marks and weaknesses in metal samples, takes a penetrating liquid, either brightly dyed or fluorescent. After being painted on the surface of the metal and allowed to sink into any surface markings, the dye is rubbed away, leaving brightly revealed markings and flaws. An analogous process, better for nonmetals, uses an electrically charged liquid painted on the nonmetal surface. After superfluous liquid is rubbed off, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed on the material and attracted to the cracks. Neither of these tests, however, can locate internal flaws.

Radiation

Internal, as well as external imperfections, can be found with X-ray or gamma-ray tests in which the radiation scans the material and impinges on a suitable photographic film. In some cases, it can be possible to focus the X rays on a significant plane in the metal, allowing a three-dimensional perspective of the flaw shape along with its location.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of parts requires transmission of sound waves higher than human hearing range within the material. By the reflection technique, a sound wave is sent from one end of the test material, reflected by the other part, and returned back to a receiver situated at the starting side. When isolating a break or weak point in the material, the sound wave is reflected and its movement disrupted. The actual delay is then a sign of the location of the mark; a map of the piece can be generated to isolate the location and dimensions of the weaknesses. By the through-transmission method, the transmitter and receiver are situated on the opposite sides of the test piece; delays in the transmission of sound waves are used to locate and measure imperfections. More often than not a water medium is employed by which transmitter, sample, and receiver are immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic aspects of a test piece are very much reflected by its overall form, magnetic techniques are utilized to demonstrate the placement and relative dimensions of flaws and marks. With magnetic testing, a tool is utilized that holds a big measure of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Placed within the initial piece is a smaller coil (the secondary coil), to which is connected an electrical measuring device. The steady current in the larger coil causes electrical current to move in the secondary coil through the method of induction. When an iron sample is slotted into the secondary coil, sharp changes in the second current should indicate flaws in the bar. This process only locates changes between areas in the length of a sample and will not isolate longer or continued imperfections that often. An analogous skill, making use of eddy currents induced in a primary coil, also can be utilized to find errors and marks. A steady current is induced in the test material. Marks that exist in the transmission of the current determine resistance of the test piece; this adaptation should be measured under the correct methods.

Infrared

Infrared techniques have sometimes been used to find material continuity in complex constructual objects. While testing the strength of adhesive conjoinments with the sandwich core and facing sheets within a ordinary sandwich structure object like plywood, for example, heat is the surface of the sandwich skin sample. In the case that bond lines are continuous, the core areas allow a heat depression in the surface sample, and the general temperatures of the face should fall lightly on the bond lines. When that bond line may be too small, gone, or faulty, however, localised temperature can not adapt. Infrared photography of the area does indicate the placement and area of the flawed adhesive. Another such technique employs thermal coatings that change hue at reaching a devised temperature.

Finally, nondestructive methods also are being shown to reveal a whole determination of the mechanical properties of a test item. Ultrasonics and thermal procedures seem the most valuable in this instance.
