The most typical question that is asked when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most popular projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and models available, it can be overwhelming for the buyer to make a decision between those technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors have far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The article below will explain why DLP projectors struggle with creating an equal level of image quality.
It’s like a set of blinds in your room for your bedroom window. By pulling a rod you can make the shutters open or closed, according to whether you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel operates like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is constructed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from when the projector turns on to when the content reaches your screen is vitally important with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which direct the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to form the projector image. An important point to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your projector screen at once. The way a DLP projector works is widely different and even how an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to projecting an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then combine each coloured element of the image into a total image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create top brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP manufacturers have placed a white segment into the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this goes and degrades colour accuracy.
I see in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and thus must be superior. For those uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of producing. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications compared to the majority of LCD projectors. Initially, this can seem to be a benefit, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is being used. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you wish to bring to life requires moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because all the colours are projected at the same time. DLP manufacturers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to fix the colour break up problem, but the expense of these projectors make them impractical for the large part of businesses and consumers.
Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and remember how the different colours of light refract varied amounts when shone through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light differently. Often with a DLP projector, a superfluous yellow colour will come up above and an extra blue will come up below an image as simple as a straight black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be adjusted to minimize these effects on the projected image, because each colour is refracted on separate LCD panels.
The sole true benefit (excluding price) with taking a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to mobility and cannot be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. If the outcome of the picture quality is crucial to you, then the answer is a no-brainer. Go for an LCD projector! LCD projectors will definitely show bright, colourful images with fewer image errors. As the Dutch came to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht had been a leisure craft used mostly by royalty and later by the burghers for the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, borne from private matches. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), made more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 bet. Yachting was found to be popular with the rich and royalty, but after that point the fashion did not last.
The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and had much naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club endured, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by conglomerating with other societies, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing was first seen in some stipulated manner on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to monarchy in 1820, it came to be named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continued site of British racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the accession of George IV. Each member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for large bets were held, and the social life was lovely. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to more than 350 tons.
In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English took dominance. Sailing was for the most part for leisure and found its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and set a benchmark of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts took the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the later half of the 19th century. The design of large yachts was originally greatly impacted by the victory of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a group led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and built in a contemporary sense, with just a model being used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the use of the research of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what science had already done for hulls.
Because most of all sailboats had to be individually custom-built, there arose a requirement for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were made. Thus, a rating rule was written, which ended up in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and amended in 1919. In modern times, one of the fastest flourishing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to single dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between these boats can be done on an even playing field with no handicapping necessary. A perfect example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
For the time that yachting was an activity largely for the aristocracy and the rich, expense was no problem, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and desire of smaller boats happened in the later half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the value of smaller yachts. Later in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became more common, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, in which steam started to replace sail power in market craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly employed in pleasure vessels. Large power yachts were progressed to a high degree, and long-distance travel became a preferred pastime of the wealthy. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then made way to yachts powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht archetype for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were exclusively power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.
In the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the manufacture of bigger steam yachts. In particular of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service for World War II.
As larger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were developed, many big boats started using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, advanced from World War I. In the decade following that, bigger power-yacht manufacture blossomed, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that period the best auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The manufacture of larger power yachts declined from 1932, and the style thereafter was in preference of smaller, less expensive boats. From World War II, lots of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting had become a globally beloved activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally owning and upkeeping their own small recreational boats. The number of boats and sailors has increased steadily, not only in the traditional places on the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes can be differentiated by the impact they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that puts the same relative requirement on all taxpayers—i.e., when tax liability and income move in relative levels. A progressive tax is recognised by a more than proportional growth in the tax onus relative to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognised by a less than proportional growth in the comparable onus. Therefore, progressive taxes are regarded as reducing inequalities in income distribution, but regressive taxes are seen to have the result of an increase in these inequalities.
The taxes that are generally thought to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, could become less so within the upper-income class—in particular if a taxpayer is able to lower his tax base by nominating deductions or by removing certain income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income demographics would also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are claimed.
Income measured over a given period might not absolutely come up with the most appropriate measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory increases in income could be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer might choose to provide for consumption by taking from savings. Thus, if taxation is compared with “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than when it is compared with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (save luxuries) are usually regressive, because the share of personal income consumed or spent for a specific good declines as the amount of personal income rises. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), calculated as a flat amount per capita, patently are regressive.
It is complicated to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of a lack of certainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of deciding who bears the tax burden rests for the most part on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.
In assessing the economic effects of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between several ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates will include those dictated in law; usually these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income increases by one dollar. Thus, if tax onus grows by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income increases. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates should regard provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than specified by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for appraising incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to realise the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, because it may be reliant on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem determines that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates determine the portion of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates commonly increase with income, both because personal allowances are provided for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households could swamp these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that lessen as income grows.
